How To Find The Boxing Gym For You

Boxing has gained immense popularity as a workout in recent years, and for good reason! It is a high-intensity, full-body workout with benefits that go beyond physical fitness.

Most, if not all gyms will have some sort of boxing class. However, if you want to find the boxing gym that's truly the right fit for you it's important to approach it with the right mindset and knowledge – especially if you are a beginner.

In this post, we'll delve into everything you need to know to find the perfect boxing gym for you, regardless of your experience level. Whether you're a beginner eager to kick-start your boxing journey or a seasoned athlete looking to refine your skills, this guide will equip you with the knowledge and mindset necessary to make finding the best boxing gym that aligns with your goals, preferences, and skill level.

First Things First, Let’s Take A Look At The Benefits Of Boxing

Whether you're looking to improve your fitness, boost your confidence, or simply blow off steam after a long day, boxing is not just a sport; it's a complete workout that engages both your body and mind.

  • Burns Calories: Boxing is a dynamic and high-intensity workout that is an effective tool for weight loss and management.
  • Improve Cardiovascular Health: The combination of cardio exercises and interval training in boxing helps strengthen your heart and lungs, improving overall cardiovascular health.
  • Build Strength: Boxing involves a variety of strength-building exercises, from punching to bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats, helping you develop lean muscle mass and increase overall strength.
  • Enhance Coordination and Agility: The fast-paced nature of boxing training requires precise movements and quick reflexes, leading to improved coordination and agility over time.
  • Total Body Workout: From punching and footwork to defensive manoeuvres, boxing engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously, providing a comprehensive full-body workout.
  • Increased Muscle Tone and Endurance: Regular boxing training helps increase muscle tone and endurance, allowing you to perform everyday tasks with greater ease and efficiency.
  • Mental and Emotional Benefits: Beyond physical fitness, boxing offers numerous mental and emotional benefits. The combination of high-intensity workouts and punching can be a great stress reliever, helping you release pent-up emotions and frustrations in a productive way.
  • Build Mental Toughness: Boxing requires mental toughness to overcome challenges both inside and outside of the ring. It teaches discipline, focus, and resilience, helping you develop a strong mindset that extends beyond the gym.

So, Why Choose A Boxing Gym?

While there is no denying the benefits of traditional gyms and workout routines, they can become boring or monotonous for many people. Boxing, on the other hand, is an exciting alternative to conventional exercise. Not only does it engage muscles you didn’t even know you had, but you are constantly challenged. This keeps your workouts exciting and prevents you from getting bored and ultimately giving up!

Tips For Finding The Perfect Boxing Gym

With so many options to choose from, finding the right boxing gym can be overwhelming! Do you choose a traditional gym or a dedicated boxing studio? To make your choice easier, here are a few things you should consider when looking to start a new boxing routine:

Consider Your Fitness Goals

The very first thing you should consider is your goals. Think about the specific goals you are looking to achieve. Do you want to build muscle, improve endurance or simply change up your regular routine? Knowing what you want to get out of a session will help you choose a gym or studio that best aligns with your goals.

Look At Location & Facilities

Another important factor to consider is the location and facilities of your chosen boxing class. Is it conveniently located near your home or workplace? Are the facilities well-maintained and equipped with the necessary boxing gear and equipment? Choosing a gym with a convenient location and adequate facilities will make it easier for you to stick to your training routine.

At Rumble, we've got you covered. With locations across Australia, you can find your closest studio to get your boxing on!

What Is Your Budget?

Another important factor to consider is cost when compared to your budget. Be sure to consider whether you need to provide your own equipment or if it is included in the price. Many boxing gyms will have various packages and memberships that can best suit your budget and availability. While affordability is important, it is best to prioritise value over price to ensure you're investing in a gym that meets your needs and offers quality training.

With Rumble Boxing, we have a range of packages and memberships on offer, so you can find the perfect class for you. Single classes are also on offer and first-timers get their first class free!

Keep Your Schedule in Mind

Consider the class schedule and availability of training sessions. Choose a gym that offers classes at times that fit your schedule and allow you to consistently attend training sessions. Also, consider the class types you would prefer to attend. While some people prefer the personalised attention of one-on-one classes, others will enjoy group classes more.

Trainer Expertise is a must

Trainer expertise and knowledge are also important factors that can affect your choice of boxing gym. Look for gyms with certified and experienced trainers who can provide personalised guidance and support. Also, consider the coaching style and approach of the trainers to ensure it aligns with your learning preferences and goals.

At Rumble Boxing, our instructors are there to keep you going! As experienced and impressive athletes, they will walk you through the process from start to finish. Feel like you can't do the workout as instructed? No worries! Our trainers offer modifications for many of the exercises we do in class, so you’ll have options. Plus, If you want to brush up on your punches, we also offer one-on-one training that can help get you up to speed - but all our sessions are beginner-friendly so there's no requirement!

Read reviews & Testimonials

The best way to determine if a gym is right for you is to look at reviews and testimonials. Online platforms, social media groups, and community forums can provide valuable insights into the gym's reputation, coaching quality, and overall experience. While most places may have a less-than-positive review, be sure to take in the full picture before making your decision.

Community & Atmosphere to keep you coming back

Lastly, choose a gym that fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where you feel comfortable and motivated to train. It makes all the difference in your journey and only motivates you to achieve more, in and out of the gym! Rumble has everything you need to keep you motivated. Inspiring instructors, pumping lights and music and a community all rolled into one, we're a boxing gym with a difference.

The Top Boxing Tips For Beginners

Now that you’ve chosen your gym and booked your class, it’s time to get started! As a boxing beginner, it's important to start your journey with the right mindset and approach. Here are some tips to help you navigate your initial stages:

  • Start Slow: Don't push yourself too hard in the beginning. It's important to gradually build your fitness level and skill and avoid burnout or injuries. Start with shorter classes and progressively increase your training duration as you get more comfortable.
  • Focus on Fundamentals: Mastering the basics of punching is key to becoming a skilled boxer. Pay attention to your footwork, stance, and punches. Practise proper technique and form from the start to develop good habits.
  • Listen to Your Body: Boxing is a physically demanding sport, and it's normal to feel soreness and fatigue. However, if you experience intense pain or discomfort, it's important to listen to your body and take a break. Pushing through injuries can worsen them and hinder your progress.
  • Stay Consistent: Consistency is key in boxing. The first few classes will be difficult and challenging and can be disheartening if it feels like you don’t see any progress. However, regularly attending classes and dedicating time to practise outside of the gym will help you improve your boxing skills quickly. Set a schedule and stick to it to make the most out of your training!
  • Tensing Up: Many beginners tend to tense up their muscles, especially when throwing punches. Relaxation is crucial in boxing, as it allows for fluid movements and conserves energy. Focus on staying loose and relaxed throughout your training.
  • Ignoring Conditioning: Boxing requires a high level of fitness and endurance. Don't neglect conditioning exercises outside of your boxing classes. Incorporate cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises into your routine to improve your overall performance.
  • Have Fun! Everyone progresses at their own pace, and the most important thing is to enjoy the process and have fun.

The best thing about a boxing class is the insight and guidance from your instructors. At Rumble Boxing, we break down each of the 6 punches and the class format, so you know exactly what to do and when to do it.

Common Equipment & Gear used in a boxing class

When attending boxing classes, it's important to have the right equipment and gear to ensure your safety and comfort. At Rumble Boxing, gloves are available to hire or purchase at our front desk, but if you have a favourite pair that you’d like to bring, that’s fine too!

  • What to wear: As a pretty intensive activity, it is best to opt for moisture-wicking fabrics that help regulate body temperature and manage sweat.
  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Boxing kicks up a sweat, so having a water bottle near by is important.
  • Personal Care: A small towel is also recommended to wipe off sweat from your face and body. This keeps sweat from your eyes, which can be distracting when you are trying to concentrate!
  • Gloves & wraps: The most important thing to bring (or hire) is hand gloves and wraps. Hand wraps provide support and protection for your wrists and hands, while boxing gloves cushion your punches and protect your hands.
